Built in 1931, The Cathedral of The Woods provided a place of worship for summer vacationers at the Medford Lakes, NJ pinelands resort. It was not until 1946 that the church became operational year-round. Like much of the surrounding community, the church was built almost entirely of logs. The interior of the sanctuary is peaceful and rustic with soft glowing light streaming in through the colorful stained glass windows by day. The chapel houses an olive wood cross from Bethlehem as well as tiny fragments of the walls of the Church of the Nativity which was built over the manger where Christ was born. On the side of the church is a beautifully inspiring memorial garden which recently has been added to the local garden tour.
The cathedral's official name is now The Protestant Community Church. Anyone wishing to visit or become better acquainted with its members or services will find the congregation warm and friendly. With its unique setting and charm, it's no wonder approximately 150 weddings a year take place here. Although a wedding minister of the church officiates the ceremony, couples are allowed to invite clergy of other denominations to participate. You can find out more information by calling the church at 609-654-4220.
