ABOUT YUPO PAPER
Yupo paper is a recyclable, waterproof, tree-free, synthetic paper. Often used for packaging and labeling, it is extruded from polypropylene pellets and is super smooth, durable and will not tear. Although it has recently become more popular and widely known, it has been used by watercolorists for decades. I first discovered Yupo paper about 25 -30 years ago. Because watercolor sits on the surface and doesn’t soak in, you can always wipe the pigment back to clean paper and you don't lose 30% of the brightness like you do on traditional cotton rag watercolor paper.
Yupo gives watercolor paintings a totally different look. In an attempt to build a more cohesive body of work, I abandoned painting in watercolor on Yupo somewhere along the way. In January of 2013 however, Yupo was rediscovered after doing a 30 day painting challenge in which I used it exclusively. It's the most forgiving, exciting and stress free way to work in watercolor!
My watercolor paintings on Yupo paper were all posted online, which led to being contacted by the V.P. of Marketing of the international art paper distributor, Legion Paper in the spring of 2013. I am now the company's Yupo consultant and in-store Yupo paper demonstrator for all the NYC Dick Blick / Utrecht Art Supply Stores and beyond.
Later that year, in 2013, I also started painting in alcohol ink on Yupo paper. With alcohol ink, you need to paint on a nonporous surface, so Yupo is a wonderful choice. The paper comes in many sizes, weights, grades and thicknesses. The most popular with fine artists today are medium weight, heavy weight and translucent. Yupo is now available directly from Legion Paper and most retail art material suppliers.
