ABOUT ALCOHOL INK
Alcohol inks are dye based, vibrant pigments that can be used on non-porous surfaces like plastics, glass, ceramic, gloss papers, canvas, tileboard and metals. These inks were originally used in scrapbooking and various other craft projects. This medium has only been used in fine art creation for a short time; the first documented account being in 2006. The medium can only be used on nonporous surfaces because the inks soak in and evaporate too quickly for traditional substrates. The main materials providing the surfaces for painting with this amazing medium are Yupo paper, vinyl, glossy card stock and ceramic tiles. Yupo paper is a synthetic, plastic paper that has been on the market for over twenty years, and is now readily available from most art material suppliers and has only recently become widely known and popular with fine artists. Ceramic tiles and tileboard (masonite with a white gloss finish) are obtained through home improvement centers.
Available in many different colors from several manufacturers, the most extensive collection of ink hues, tools and accessories comes from Ranger Ink, a craft oriented manufacturer based in Tinton Falls, NJ. Alcohol based pens and permanent markers are also used seamlessly with the liquid inks. Other manufacturers include Jacquard - Piñata, Copic and Spectrum Noir.
Creating with alcohol inks is fun and liberating. The vibrant colors and happy accidents help to create an exciting, personal experience! Interesting effects, patterns, designs and outcomes are achieved through extensive techniques and varied approaches. The inks teach people to loosen up, go with the flow and release their tight-fisted grip on their art and on life in general. Beginners and seasoned artists alike, benefit from more joy in the process and enhanced creativity. Working with the inks is an avenue to really experiencing the moment. New found inspiration is discovered through experimentation and exploration. I have seen students experience an increased exuberance in life through getting involved with the inks and experiencing art their own way through this enjoyable art process.
